Clear weather of London in December! (Borough Market & London Eye & Thames river clipper)

 23th, December, 2015, Wednesday

It was fine weather. We could see blue sky! People who live in London know how it is wonderful for us… I also like mysterious mood of London like movie of Mary Poppins. However, blue sky is our treasure (You may know what I mean!).
Today, I plan to go to Borough market to prepare my Christmas Eve party. But it was clear sky. After my shopping, I decided to board Thames river clipper.

Borough market has already been in air of Christmas.

These were British traditional pie (“Game pie”) of Christmas. According to shop assistant, people always have cool Game pie. I ate it and thought it was very healthy and good for eating without heating.

At the London Bridge Pier, I also met Christmas market at the pier.

Passing through under the London Bridge….

 Beautiful & lovely blue sky!

  I saw St Paul Cathedral.

This was “Big Ben (Now it was named as “Elizabeth Tower”)”. People always wants to take a picture.

I could see Christmas market in front of Tate Modern again.

 Ship?
 船?

This is Tower Bridge. It always looks glorious…

This is “Gherkin” designed by Norman Foster (famous Architecture of UK)

This is city hall also designed by Norman Foster (famous Architecture of UK)

…..In fact, I believe that I would reach London Eye pier. But the clipper suddenly return and headed for Greenwich…I recognize my (any) misunderstanding (I can’t understand even now…) and got off the clipper at Canary Wharf pier…
But any way, I was lucky. Because I could enjoy good traveling by boat under blue sky.
*For your reference…Tube station of Canary Wharf is also designed by Norman Foster.

And, today I decided to challenge “London Eye”. It was so expensive that I felt easy to challenge…However, blue sky in London is so valuable….

This is Big Ben from the sky. I remember the opening of the movie of “Mary Poppins”. Our London Eye capsule was getting higher and higher…..

This is St Paul Cathedral from sky!

How lovely day today was!

Enjoying London scenery from sky was different experience with just go around.

London’s cloudy and foggy weather has mysterious mood like famous movies and books. But sometimes we miss sun shine. So I always want to find good ways to enjoy fine weather as much as possible.

Christmas day in England part 2 (Christmas Cracker in St Martin in the Fields)

22th December 2015, Tuesday

Today, I joined London Octave’s Christmas Cracker in St Martin in the Fields.
The meaning of Christmas Cracker was not found in the dictionary, but it might mean something special from orchestra.

This is Christmas tree in front of the church. Opening time was 19:30. Arrived early and seeking some souvenir….

The Cracker (music) was wonderful. I like “O Holy Night” from the first. It was wonderful. In addition to this, there were special music. Especially “Adagio and Allegro from Trio BWV 525 for 2 flutes and continuo” had little nostalgic melody and performance by flutes sounded toward my heart.

The most interesting things was, sometimes customer was asked to join the choir!
“Once in Royal David’s city”, “God rest you Merry Gentleman”, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”...We sang with choir. It was exceptional event for me. Also, Singing “The Twelve Days of Christmas” was very fun. We sang according to individual birth months.
“Once in Royal David’s city”, “God rest you Merry Gentleman”, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”の美しい調べを一緒に歌うとともに、誕生月毎にパートを振り分けられて歌う“The Twelve Days of Christmas”はとても楽しい曲であり、とても充実した時間を過ごすことが出来ました。

British lady next to me and I shared our deep impression with each other, and event was finished. This “Cracker” was one of the most impressive one during my stay in UK as well as another cracker (in Christmas party)!

Christmas day in England part 1 (Christmas markets (Bath), Santa train)

6th and 12th December, 2015

I believe that Japanese Christmas celebration is similar to European Christmas. But there were some difference…
In my knowledge, we always have a party and eat Steak, salad, French fried potatoes, soup, and sweets (cookies and Christmas cake). Sometimes we go out and have a lunch by using “public transportation (this point is important)”.
And we don’t always have roasted turkey, Christmas pudding. Also, we don’t always join Christmas cracker (in fact, there are 2 types of cracker; cracker and enjoyable music show. I will explain later.), and Christmas services in cathedral.

Therefore, I would like to write about British (European) Christmas.
Firstly, I would write about some kinds of Christmas tour.

I joined the bus tour and visited Bath, Alresford (to take Santa train (steam line of Watercress line!)) and Winchester (as written before).
*Joining tour was comfortable. It is effective way to enjoy many things within limited time.

-Bath-
バース

Bath has great scenery. As you know, this town is a world heritage as its beautiful traditional look of stores and houses on a street. After enjoying a Christmas market, we enjoyed walking around the town, along Avon (means “river”!) river, and so on.

 This is Bath Abbey.

This is traditional buildings produced by stones, Avon river, and public space that I was walking around.

In addition to this, we could enjoy traditional brioche.
We went to Sarry Rann's and bought Sarry Rann's brioche by French traditional (Sarry's) recipe.

Also, I went to Bath Ban. That was a nice cafeteria. I could find delicious bread named "Bath Ban". It contained black beans and sugar. It was not too sweet and tasty. I bought it as souvenir. Most impressive thing is to have the first "afternoon tea" at the cafe. It was first time to have it in UK!! I enjoyed it indeed because it contains some Christmas menu such as roast turkey sandwich and mince pie. Especially turkey sandwich was very tasty!

Lastly, we was walking around the town and saw Royal Crescent. This is designed by architecture who is always particular about “No three”.

Bath was too large to see all things within 1 day. I would like to go there again!

We could see Stonehenge on the way to Bath. The Stonehenge was surrounded by a flock of sheep.

-Alresford and Santa train (watercress line)

I went to Alresford because I definitely wanted to try traditional steam train. Fortunately it was Christmas season. Therefore, I enjoyed "Santa train" as well.

There were nice Christmas decoration in Alresford station.

I met Santa Claus, enjoyed delicious mince pie (in fact, this mince pie was the most delicious one that I had ever eaten!!!), and good countryside sight of Hampshire from the window.

Steam line from the top of the small hill is so good. I found the good place for photo near the station!

After joining Santa train, I was walking around Alresford. There are some thatched roof houses. In this town, I enjoyed calm atmosphere and shopping (I could buy nice Christmas card for my friends).

I have wanted to board a steam line for a long time. Today, my wish is realized, as well as I could enjoy special Christmas event (Santa train). I felt happy during walking around this calm towm.

Winchester ~ Christmas market

 6th and 12th December, 2015

In fact, this town became one of the most favorite one during my stay. It was very attractive because of its tranquil atmosphere. Especially, walking along Itchen was so nice! Also, this town is known as King Arthurian romances. Therefore, we can find some story related to the king.

This is the status of King Arthur.

This is Winchester City Mill near the Itchen river. This is one of the oldest working watermill. In Saturday and Sunday, cooking performance using its whole-wheat flour was performed. Due to this, nice pleasant smelling hung in the air as I entered into the mill.

These scone, mince pie and ginger bread cup cake (especially, a cup cake) were very nice.

The whole-wheat was produced by using water power. I bought one pack of flour (1.5kg/ 2 pounds). I baked a bread according to recipe card given in the mill….

Published web site of the mill is as below;

I could see the mill from the yard. According to the explanation, sometimes otters and gray wagtails were coming to this yard. There are many natures here.

After leaving from the mill, I was walking along the river. It was tranquil atmosphere. I sometimes stopped walking and listened to sound of river. It was as if I was in any book.

Also I could enjoy Christmas market of Winchester in front of the Cathedral.

I could find some nice goods. My favorite thing was ornament that I could eat! It was made by chocolate. It was very cute.

And I like this stall. I enjoyed mulled wine here.

This town had nice atmosphere and beautiful scenery. I want to go to this town again to enjoy good atmosphere.

About Lunch:

 I tried to go to the famous restaurant as below;

 But all seats were booked. Therefore, I went to another nice restaurant (No.5 Bridge Street). This restaurant was recommended by the famous restaurant’s staff and I could enjoy traditional dish;

This is fish cake. Cake doesn’t mean sweets. It was like a fish croquette. This is the first time to have it but it was very nice. I ate it with apple juice produced in UK.
